“… the first prerequisite in photography is a keen, insightful eye… there is no substitute for regular, rigorous practice. This I have not done for 30 years.

Practice is what this blog is about… many of the forthcoming photographs will be of limited interest or "artistic" merit, but they will hopefully be the start of a new, strong foundation and the honing of clearer photographic vision.”

Apr. 24 – SE Finger of East Shoal Lake

I didn't realize, until this afternoon, that East Shoal Lake is under 10 miles from Ruth's Ridge. I decided to look for a new photo of the day somewhere further afield, and the SE finger of East Shoal Lake is where I found it/them.

This is a fraction of the life that pulsated at the edge of the water.

I believe the footprints are of a mother bear and her cub.

Apr. 23 – Nature Running Amok in North 40

A series of looong shots of a pair of Sandhill Cranes, and recent evidence of the passage of a moose. Yesterday marked two years since Ruth & I first toured the property that has become Ruth's Ridge. On that day, I also photographed moose tracks. I may have to see about ambushing the big fella one of these evenings.

Apr. 18 – Remembering Robert Frost

Stopping by woods on a starry evening.

1.6 second exposure, handheld.

Apr. 17 – Meadow Larking No More.

Walking up the ridge, saw a hawk lift out of the clearing. A few minutes later, we came across what it had left behind.

Apr. 12 – Hawk & another Dog Trilogy

Having arrived home from Winnipeg shortly after 2 p.m., I took the dogs out for their bodily relief & exercise. I was wondering what already familiar subject I might photograph when a bird sailed by over the ridge on the 50-60 kph winds. Luckily, it sailed back. I managed to squeeze off four shots, of which this was the most sharp. The photo was taken with a 24-105 lens, and the bird was less than 1/10 of an inch on the 1 inch CMOS. Not bad quality for a serendipitous shot.

I'm not an accomplished birder, but the hefty compendium entitled, "The Birds of Manitoba," which Allison & Peter gave us for Christmas suggests it's a Red-tailed Hawk.

The dog, of course, is the evermore enthusiastic Fercos.

Apr. 10 – Today & Yesterday

The melt goes on.

Yesterday, Ruth & I opened about 100 yards of channels in the snow to facilitate drainage. The waters rushed and roared and, today, the waters are even higher, having now breached the driveway. By nightfall, the Jackfish Creek, one mile east of us, will be overflowing the road.
